Impressive test results: New technology removes 99.9% of PFAS from leachate

New data from an ongoing pilot test at a Danish landfill shows remarkable results. BioScavenge has succeeded in treating PFAS-contaminated leachate down to levels far below national limits.

GRINDSTED, Denmark. As the debate over PFAS contamination intensifies, BioScavenge is now presenting concrete solutions. Data from the second and current pilot test of an innovative treatment technology shows that the feared forever chemicals can be removed almost entirely from complex wastewater (leachate).

The latest analyses document a significant reduction:

  • PFAS-4: reduced from 560 ng/l to just 0.14 ng/l
  • PFAS-22: reduced from 2400 ng/l to just 3.1 ng/l

For reference, the Danish limit for PFAS-4 in drinking water is 2 ng/l. The result means the technology not only treats the water but leaves it in a state well below the thresholds set by authorities.

A breakthrough for the environment
Leachate, the water collected from landfills, is notoriously difficult to treat because it contains a complex mixture of many different substances.

From pilot test to full scale
The current test is being carried out at the Grindsted landfill in partnership with Deponi Syd. The aim of the project’s second phase is to confirm the stability of the treatment over time and to support the further work of rolling out the technology at full scale at Danish and international landfills.

By treating PFAS directly at the source, the spread of these substances to groundwater is effectively prevented, as is the burden on municipal treatment plants that are rarely built to handle these chemicals.
